Universal Steel Buildings Supplies Hangars to New York Airport

June 7th, 2011 — 1:01am

Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) April 30, 2011

Universal Steel Buildings has contracted to design, engineer and supply three Olympia Steel Buildings® pre-engineered steel buildings to FirstAIR Group of Horseheads, New York. Universal Steel Buildings Construction Services will complete the concrete work and erect the prefabricated metal buildings planned for the hangar-terminal complex on site. Construction on the more than twelve thousand square foot multi-purpose pre-engineered metal building hangar-airport terminal complex will begin in May of this year.

FirstAIR Group Inc is a company comprised of Aviation, Development and Business Resource professionals, providing aircraft maintenance, aircraft charter and sales, helicopter scenic rides and photography, and International Airport Development in Horseheads, New York near the Elimira-Corning Regional Airport.

The new Olympia Steel Buildings airplane hangar will accommodate a large Kingair Twin Jet and a jet-propelled helicopter used to provide scenic Finger Lakes area tours, as well as to accommodate maintenance areas for commercial airlines and private planes. The hangar-terminal complex is comprised of three pre-engineered steel buildings connected into one huge twelve-thousand foot complex with a one-hundred foot clearspan that arcs thirty-five feet into the air providing ample space for the planes garaged for maintenance and protection from the elements. An existing t-hangar on the property will be coming down later this year to make room for additional pre-engineered steel airplane hangars once the current construction project is completed.

“It’s a very exciting project for us,” states Darin Skomo, project manager for the Construction Division of Universal Steel Buildings. “The scenery on the drive from Pittsburgh to FirstAir’s Horseheads, New York location through the Allegheny National Forest is breathtaking. The project itself is challenging: designing three pre-engineered steel buildings to connect as one with a one-hundred foot clearspan arching thirty-five feet into the air to provide clearance for the planes that will be garaged there,” continues Skomo. “We will finish construction before the big Watkins Glenn NASCAR race in August so the new hangar and air terminal will be ready to accommodate the many NASCAR fans who will be flying in to enjoy the race.”

Because of the strength and durability of steel and the remarkable clearspan space that is achievable with Olympia Steel Buildings unique trussless metal building design – up to three hundred feet of completely clearspan space with no obstructing columns – pre-engineered metal building construction is ideal for aircraft hangars and air terminals. Universal Steel Buildings supplies Olympia Steel Buildings pre-engineered steel buildings and metal building systems to private and commercial airports, military and civilian agencies and FBO’s all over the world.

Butler Manufacturing and High Steel Structures Team Up on Steel Building Systems for Athletic Center at West Point

March 27th, 2011 — 6:12pm

Wednesday, January 03, 2007
Lancaster, Pa. (January 3, 2007) – Butler Manufacturing of Annville, Pa., and High Steel Structures Inc. of Lancaster, Pa., teamed up to fabricate steel framing used to build a new athletic center at West Point, a project that began in June 2006. Butler Manufacturing had the lead on designing the frames and called upon assistance from High Steel Structures, a bridge superstructure fabricator, as an efficient approach to making the larger components for the project. High Steel Structures has found that providing strategic assistance to building fabricators such as Butler is a logical application of their core competencies in the bridge-building industry.

History of the project:

In 2005, the United States Military Academy announced an initiative that would complete the Michie Stadium Athletic Complex begun in 2001. The key addition was the indoor athletic training facility.

Following a year-long process of design and construction planning, it was determined that a pre-engineered steel building system would be best suited to create the unique features planned for the new 92,400-square-foot building. This decision was made in large part due to the ability of such structures to span large areas, to offer shorter construction times than traditional methods, and to provide greater overall lifecycle value.

Butler Manufacturing played a critical role in the process, designing the frames that were used for the building. The plans include an indoor training facility that is unlike the field houses or athletic facilities found on most college campuses. The building has unusually high (65 feet) ceilings to accommodate punting, kicking, and return drills.

Other special features include padding on the interior walls to ensure a higher degree of safety, special lighting configurations to enhance the quality of videos shot during practices, a 40-yard sprint track for speed training, and FieldTurf® artificial turf to provide a field surface that is more realistic and safer for the athletes.

In all, more than 825 tons of steel were used to construct the facility.

The project was funded by the largest single donation in the history of the federal Service Academies—a $15 million donation to West Point’s Association of Graduates from Bill and Carol Foley. Mr. Foley graduated from the Military Academy in 1967 and was commissioned as an officer in the United States Air Force where he reached the rank of Captain.

Mr. Foley is the Chairman of the Board and the CEO of Fidelity National Financial Corporation, a global provider of products and outsourced solutions to the financial and real estate industries. He also serves on the boards of JEA, Inc. and Florida Rock Industries, Inc. Until recently, Mr. Foley was the Chairman of the Board of CKE Restaurants, Inc. He and his wife Carol have four children and reside in Jacksonville, Fla.

The facility will be named the Foley Athletic Center in recognition of Mr. Foley’s donation, which is the largest single gift in the history of West Point. Construction is scheduled to be completed in January 2007.

MBMI promotes the use of solar panels to motivate other companies to also be socially responsible by building green. Investing in solar panels saves money in electricity and the actual expense is decreased with a 30-percent federal investment tax credit.

Clint Walker, President of Southwestern Solar Systems, contractor of the Solar Panel Parking Canopies and provider of the solar panels for this project, computed the following environmental impact analysis of Drew Ford’s solar panels:

• Panels will supply 18% of total energy usage
• Monthly electric bill will be reduced by 22%
• With rising electricity prices annual electricity bill savings will grow by 601% over 25 years
• Reduction of Green House Gas emissions by 5,199 tons of CO2 (Over 25 years)
• Equivalent to planting 207,972 trees

Commenting on MBMI’s green movement for energy efficient building, MBMI Engineer Ian Strompf says: “It’s becoming increasingly apparent to us that going green is beneficial for our environment and our customers. The current population, especially the youth, is showing immense interest in sustainability. Yes, there are additional costs to add solar panels to your building; but the returns on your investment from electricity savings and improved sustainability and social responsibility make it an advisable investment.”

The Metal Building Outlet Has Started Bidding Wars in Steel Building Quotes

February 9th, 2011 — 3:31pm

prsync.com

Littleton, Colorado (October 30, 2010) – The Metal Building Outlet of Littleton Colorado has been accused of starting bidding wars between metal and steel building manufacturers. Their unique business model has manufacturers scrambling to re-figure quotes.

The Metal Building Outlet has taken their knowledge of a slower economy and market competition to create opportunity for their clients and manufacturers. By allowing companies to compete for their client’s business the manufacturers fill up empty slots in their schedules, while clients get highly discounted buildings.

When you combine the already lower price of steel buildings compared to traditional structures, along with the deep discounts Metal Building Outlet receives, the cost savings to clients can exceed 50%. This allows many churches, schools, and businesses to proceed with building projects they had put on hold.

Price is not the only concern of the Metal Building Outlet. With years of experience in the steel building industry they ensure their clients only receive quotes from companies who meet the highest standards and are professionally recognized by top building agencies. They work with their clients to meet all local building codes and regulations.

Where many steel building contractors deal only with smaller structures, the Metal Building Outlet works with structures from small storage sheds, large barns, churches, industrial buildings, and even large aircraft hangars.

One of the greatest benefits enjoyed by their clients is the speed of construction. A steel building can be built in a fraction of the time of traditional wood or brick construction. With all the components being prefabricated and ready for assembly when it arrives on site the contractor’s job is simplified saving on cost and time.

Steel buildings are designed strong and constructed to last. This is not the same type of construction you find in small flimsy storage sheds, but is the same powerful construction you find in large factories and schools. The structures can be insulated to provide equal or superior energy efficiency to other traditional structures. With the proper doors, windows, and metal building accessories a metal building has great curb appeal.

The bidding wars which the Metal Building Outlet has started ends up being a win-win situation for both their clients and their numerous manufacturing partners. With the volume of business they provide the lowest prices possible to clients and help manufacturers in keeping their employees busy. The perfect arrangement for everyone.

Steel Buildings are Becoming Popular Options for Churches

February 9th, 2011 — 3:03pm

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) – Jan 18, 2011 – Steel buildings are known for their adaptability and are engineered to easily adapt to custom demands without the expenses traditional construction can incur. These are some of the reasons why churches are exploring steel building options.

During the planning phase for your church, cost is obviously going to be a concern. Prefab steel buildings are unique and flexible structures that can be used for metal church buildings, school buildings, community centers, and religious halls. Metal buildings provide great advantages in design flexibility, energy efficiency and durability of a church building. Metal churches are popular largely from the cost advantages of the pre-engineered construction, fast erection, the flexibility in construction and use, appeal, and safety.

Steel church buildings can give enough room for gathering rooms, a choir rooms, vestibules, and youth rooms. The whole steel building system is pre-drilled, pre-punched, pre-engineered and pre-fabricated which can greatly reduce time and expenses.

Compared to wood, stick or brick buildings, steel church buildings are more energy efficient, simpler and faster to erect, and up to 50% cheaper to buy.
The erection expenses of pre-fab steel buildings are substantially less, usually cost about half of convential construction methods. Since everything is designed ahead of time to fit, there is no welding or fabrication on site, and no leftover materials. You can even use unskilled laborers most of the time, or even church volunteers can help.

Steel buildings for churches have many benefits to ponder. Normal pre-fab steel buildings take less time to erect and minimize expenses. They are easily modified and often without any major structural change, so it can really grow and adapt to the church’s needs.

Prefabricated Steel Buildings Provide an Economical Construction Alternative

December 13th, 2010 — 11:32pm

The term “steel building” is often associated with simple storage sheds and basic structures. With advancements in the industry over the past forty years, however, steel buildings have broken that stereotype and are being used for an ever-growing list of larger and more complex applications. Steel has found its way into advanced farm buildings, riding arenas, aircraft hangers, commercial centers and more.

Prefabricated Steel Building Background
The 20th century marked the beginning of the steel building industry. With the widespread use of automobiles in the early 1900s, one of the first uses of steel building was the garage. As consumers saw the low cost and value of steel, storage facilities, garages and storage sheds made of galvanized steel quickly spread around the country. In the first decade of the 1900s innovative builders also created farm storage buildings and grain bins out of steel instead of wood. By the end of the Depression, these storage bins had proven their durability when compared to wood structures. This was validated in 1938, when the U.S. Department of Agriculture ordered 30,666 steel grain bins to store surplus crops. This order amounted to 1 ½ times the number of steel grain bins created by the entire industry only one year before.

In 1940 Butler Manufacturing Company introduced the first line of prefabricated steel buildings using rigid frame design. (A rigid frame is a skeleton for the building’s framework, made of steel girders.) This allowed businesses to purchase larger and more capable steel buildings at a lower cost and with a shorter construction schedule. By this time, the aeronautical world had embraced steel as well; steel aircraft hangers were being widely used in the civilian and military sectors.

Following World War II, engineers continued to improve prefabricated steel buildings, increasing the size and sophistication of these building “kits.” The Metal Building Manufacturers Association (MBMA) was founded in 1956 to drive innovation, standardization, and greater acceptance of prefabricated steel buildings. Their efforts have worked; the MBMA estimates that steel building systems were used for about $1 million of new construction in 1960. In 2000, steel building systems accounted for almost 1.16 billion square feet and $2.5 billion of new low-rise commercial construction.

Steel and Concrete Together: Using the Strengths of Each

December 13th, 2010 — 11:16pm

generalcontractor.com

Up until now the previous articles focused on buildings made entirely of steel. An important fact to remember is that the use of steel in building is not necessarily exclusive of concrete or blocks. In larger or more sophisticated projects the different raw materials and construction methods are frequently used together.

Here are some very common examples of how steel, concrete and tilt-up construction are used together to provide the best quality and value:

A large steel office building or retail center may use tiltwall concrete panels for interior fire walls or exterior facades. The Mervyn’s department store in the Dallas / Fort Worth, Texas area pictured to the right was constructed in just this manner.

An existing manufacturing building or warehouse made of concrete blocks could be expanded by adding a steel lean-to structure to one of its exterior support walls.

A distribution center built using the cement blocks of traditional construction will frequently use a steel roofing system and a rigid frame similar to what a metal building might use. Regardless what material is used, this combination of a rigid frame and steel roof is necessary to provide a large clearspan.

These are just a few situations where the best choice for a project might be a steel building with tilt-up construction components, or a concrete structure with steel framework, roof system or steel add-ons or expansions. A general contractor who is well versed in the advantages and limitations of all methods of construction can help determine what is the best approach on any given project.
