Panel Thermal Efficiency Meets Requirements of the Future

June 16th, 2011 — 3:00am

erectors.com

The Metal Construction Association (MCA), expanding the use of metal in construction through marketing, technology, and education, has recently taken steps to make architects, architectural students, universities, and builders more aware of benefits of insulated metal panels (IMP), a type of paneling that will be known for its efficiency, high performance, reduced erection time and coordination, thermal performance, and aesthetics.
First, insulated metal panels are installed outboard of a metal stud cavity or other support system, minimizing thermal short circuits. Secondly, the panels incorporate a metal air and vapor barrier, eliminating other materials and construction trade coordination. Third, insulated metal panels provide highly efficient insulation in a small space. Fourth, the panels also provide a metal aesthetic exterior in a variety of sizes shapes, and colors. Superior thermal performance of insulated metal panels shadows standard wall construction practices and how they meet current and pending thermal code guidelines.

“Architects and contractors need to know, not only about the IMP, but also about the limitations of current wall construction methods, new thermal codes requirements, and how to build a quality exterior metal wall system,” said Scott Kriner, MCA spokesperson.

Recognition by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) of the shortcomings of insulated metal stud cavities, along with increased thermal performance requirements, has illuminated IMP as a uniquely efficient solution.

“Insulated metal panels have been manufactured for over 30 years, yet unlike other construction materials, knowledge of the benefits and uses of this product are limited in the architectural community,” remarked Kriner. “Now, with new energy codes and moisture control concerns, insulated metal panels provide a unique high performance solution in a compact product, eliminating other materials and reducing field labor.”

Insulated metal panels were one of the first exterior wall systems to install insulation outside of the support system without compromising thermal performance. Now, other systems are attempting to find similar answers, but must contend with various trades, insulation material efficiency, thermal short circuits and fire code acceptance. Currently, IMP systems are one of the few that meet all the performance criteria with minimal compromising.

“It is a product with a rich history, but made to meet and exceed the requirements of the future,” finished Kriner.

buildings or needs information on their fire‐resistance properties.”
This design guide was commissioned by the MBMA to consolidate and present the available
information on common fire‐resistant construction practices for metal building systems and the
twelve existing MBMA sponsored fire‐resistive rated assemblies. It has been developed in the
context of the relevant provisions of the 2009 International Building Code (IBC) and its typical
applications in the United States. The guide provides up‐to‐date information on passive forms of
fire resistant systems, codes, detailed explanations of specific fire protection materials and ways
to provide one‐ and two‐hour fire rated assemblies for walls, columns, roofs, floors and ceilings.
The Fire Resistance Guide has 8 chapters plus appendices. It includes both broad background
information for practitioners not familiar with the subject as well as advanced guidance and
insights for more experienced users. The guide specifically addresses the steel‐fire protection for
low‐rise metal building systems, also referred to as passive protection. There are chapters on
gypsum board , spray‐on  materials and other fire protection materials. Additionally, there is acomprehensive list of resources for fire resistive design, and appendices with both MBMA sponsored and other fire‐resistive assemblies.
MBMA has served metal building systems manufacturers and suppliers since 1956. Its
membership represents more than $1.9 billion in annual steel shipments and accounts for
approximately 39% of the total non‐residential low‐rise construction market in the United
States. MBMA provides engineering leadership through the many research programs that it
sponsors annually, often in coordination with major universities and engineering schools
throughout North America. This research is used to improve the performance, efficiency and
quality of metal building systems and to elevate the technology used to produce them.

Universal Steel Buildings Supplies Hangars to New York Airport

June 7th, 2011 — 1:01am

Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) April 30, 2011

Universal Steel Buildings has contracted to design, engineer and supply three Olympia Steel Buildings® pre-engineered steel buildings to FirstAIR Group of Horseheads, New York. Universal Steel Buildings Construction Services will complete the concrete work and erect the prefabricated metal buildings planned for the hangar-terminal complex on site. Construction on the more than twelve thousand square foot multi-purpose pre-engineered metal building hangar-airport terminal complex will begin in May of this year.

FirstAIR Group Inc is a company comprised of Aviation, Development and Business Resource professionals, providing aircraft maintenance, aircraft charter and sales, helicopter scenic rides and photography, and International Airport Development in Horseheads, New York near the Elimira-Corning Regional Airport.

The new Olympia Steel Buildings airplane hangar will accommodate a large Kingair Twin Jet and a jet-propelled helicopter used to provide scenic Finger Lakes area tours, as well as to accommodate maintenance areas for commercial airlines and private planes. The hangar-terminal complex is comprised of three pre-engineered steel buildings connected into one huge twelve-thousand foot complex with a one-hundred foot clearspan that arcs thirty-five feet into the air providing ample space for the planes garaged for maintenance and protection from the elements. An existing t-hangar on the property will be coming down later this year to make room for additional pre-engineered steel airplane hangars once the current construction project is completed.

“It’s a very exciting project for us,” states Darin Skomo, project manager for the Construction Division of Universal Steel Buildings. “The scenery on the drive from Pittsburgh to FirstAir’s Horseheads, New York location through the Allegheny National Forest is breathtaking. The project itself is challenging: designing three pre-engineered steel buildings to connect as one with a one-hundred foot clearspan arching thirty-five feet into the air to provide clearance for the planes that will be garaged there,” continues Skomo. “We will finish construction before the big Watkins Glenn NASCAR race in August so the new hangar and air terminal will be ready to accommodate the many NASCAR fans who will be flying in to enjoy the race.”

Because of the strength and durability of steel and the remarkable clearspan space that is achievable with Olympia Steel Buildings unique trussless metal building design – up to three hundred feet of completely clearspan space with no obstructing columns – pre-engineered metal building construction is ideal for aircraft hangars and air terminals. Universal Steel Buildings supplies Olympia Steel Buildings pre-engineered steel buildings and metal building systems to private and commercial airports, military and civilian agencies and FBO’s all over the world.

Why Choose A Metal Building For Your Barn In Houston?

June 7th, 2011 — 12:53am

articledashboard.com /By: Roel Marez

Over the years, the popularity of metal as a primary construction material for horse barn has dramatically increaseda clear sign that many builders are growing more and more aware on the benefits of this material.

Here are the reasons why metal should be preferred more than any other materials in building a horse barn:

1.Cost This is perhaps the most attractive advantage of metal for many equestrians. Savings can be as much as 50% or 60% compared to other building materials. This includes the cost of labor as pre-fabricated metals are easier to build and require less time to assemble.
2.Possibility for future expansion Traditional barn that is made mainly of wood is built permanently, offering no room for expansion. Should there be any plan to expand, the whole building must be redesigned or another barn should be constructed. As a result, expansion for wood horse barn can be more expensive. Metal barn is different. It is easier to expand since it is easier to construct. Expanding a metal barn becomes cheaper.

3.Environmentally friendly The metal that is used on barns are made from recycled scrap metal, not old growth trees. Meaning, the nature don’t have to sacrifice several trees for you to be able to build a new barn.
4.Low maintenance When building a barn, you don’t just count to initial expenses, you also count the long-term expenses and upkeep cost. Unlike wood that requires periodic repainting and replacing of rotten parts, metal require no repainting and little maintenance. Metal is also not susceptible to termites and other insects that can shorten the life of the structure. And unlike wood barns, keeping metal barns clean is much easier.
5.Insurance savings Because the materials used for metal barns are 100% non-combustible steel, you will pay less on insurance premiums, giving you more savings.
6.Long life A metal barn building typically has 25-year warranty, making it almost a lifetime of guaranteed repairs under warranty.
7.Kick proof and chew proof Serious injuries such as splinters often happen inside the barn than when the horse is outside. Wood stalls are potentially dangerous for your horses in the event of accidental kicking. Wood is also prone to chipping as horses have the natural tendency to chew everything in from of them. With metal, this is not possible.
8.Energy-efficient and modern design Wood can be construction many different ways, but it has the same look. With metal, designs are endless.
9.Attractive finishes Metal barn can easily match the design and color of your existing building.
10.Durable and weather resistant Wood tends to rot, decay and weaken as a result of varying weather conditions. And if you are living in Houston where weather can go from perfectly sunny to devastatingly worst in just a matter of days, you need a material that can not only withstand different weather conditions but also last for the years to come.
