metalconstructionnews.com

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design is a holistic green building rating program. Introduced in 2000 by the US Green Building Council, LEED has transformed the green building market.
Steelscape Inc. is a strong supporter of LEED and its goal of sustainable construction. As such, Steelscape has developed a LEED Guide to assist customers in understanding the various LEED rating systems and how they influence the construction industry.

The Steelscape LEED Guide provides basic information on the categories within each LEED rating tool, the various credits, how points are awarded, and where Steelscape’s products may be used to help buildings meet LEED requirements.

Panel Thermal Efficiency Meets Requirements of the Future

June 16th, 2011 — 3:00am

The Metal Construction Association (MCA), expanding the use of metal in construction through marketing, technology, and education, has recently taken steps to make architects, architectural students, universities, and builders more aware of benefits of insulated metal panels (IMP), a type of paneling that will be known for its efficiency, high performance, reduced erection time and coordination, thermal performance, and aesthetics.
First, insulated metal panels are installed outboard of a metal stud cavity or other support system, minimizing thermal short circuits. Secondly, the panels incorporate a metal air and vapor barrier, eliminating other materials and construction trade coordination. Third, insulated metal panels provide highly efficient insulation in a small space. Fourth, the panels also provide a metal aesthetic exterior in a variety of sizes shapes, and colors. Superior thermal performance of insulated metal panels shadows standard wall construction practices and how they meet current and pending thermal code guidelines.

“Architects and contractors need to know, not only about the IMP, but also about the limitations of current wall construction methods, new thermal codes requirements, and how to build a quality exterior metal wall system,” said Scott Kriner, MCA spokesperson.

Recognition by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) of the shortcomings of insulated metal stud cavities, along with increased thermal performance requirements, has illuminated IMP as a uniquely efficient solution.

“Insulated metal panels have been manufactured for over 30 years, yet unlike other construction materials, knowledge of the benefits and uses of this product are limited in the architectural community,” remarked Kriner. “Now, with new energy codes and moisture control concerns, insulated metal panels provide a unique high performance solution in a compact product, eliminating other materials and reducing field labor.”

Insulated metal panels were one of the first exterior wall systems to install insulation outside of the support system without compromising thermal performance. Now, other systems are attempting to find similar answers, but must contend with various trades, insulation material efficiency, thermal short circuits and fire code acceptance. Currently, IMP systems are one of the few that meet all the performance criteria with minimal compromising.

“It is a product with a rich history, but made to meet and exceed the requirements of the future,” finished Kriner.

About Metal Construction Association (MCA)
Founded in 1983, MCA strives to expand the use of metal in construction through marketing, technology, and education. As a metal in construction industry organization, MCA’s members can develop and implement both macro and micro programs and activities to promote the use of metal in construction. MCA offers its members a unique opportunity in focusing industry efforts to increase the use of metal through innovation. For more information, visit www.metalconstruction.org.

MBMA Releases Fire Resistance Design Guide for Metal Building Systems

June 16th, 2011 — 2:46am

CLEVELAND, OHIO – www.mbma.com:  The Metal Building Manufacturers Association (MBMA)
announces the release of the 2010 Fire Resistance Design Guide for Metal Building Systems. The
guide provides building owners, architects, engineers, specifiers, fire marshals, building code
officials, contractors, product vendors, builders and metal building manufacturers information
on how to effectively meet fire resistance requirements of a project with metal building
systems.

“MBMA has consistently been at the forefront of design and testing the fire resistive properties
of metal building systems,” says MBMA chairman Chuck Haslebacher.  “This new guide brings
the available information together in a handy reference guide for anyone who works with metal
buildings or needs information on their fire‐resistance properties.”
This design guide was commissioned by the MBMA to consolidate and present the available
information on common fire‐resistant construction practices for metal building systems and the
twelve existing MBMA sponsored fire‐resistive rated assemblies. It has been developed in the
context of the relevant provisions of the 2009 International Building Code (IBC) and its typical
applications in the United States. The guide provides up‐to‐date information on passive forms of
fire resistant systems, codes, detailed explanations of specific fire protection materials and ways
to provide one‐ and two‐hour fire rated assemblies for walls, columns, roofs, floors and ceilings.
The Fire Resistance Guide has 8 chapters plus appendices. It includes both broad background
information for practitioners not familiar with the subject as well as advanced guidance and
insights for more experienced users. The guide specifically addresses the steel‐fire protection for
low‐rise metal building systems, also referred to as passive protection. There are chapters on
gypsum board , spray‐on  materials and other fire protection materials. Additionally, there is acomprehensive list of resources for fire resistive design, and appendices with both MBMA sponsored and other fire‐resistive assemblies.
MBMA has served metal building systems manufacturers and suppliers since 1956. Its
membership represents more than $1.9 billion in annual steel shipments and accounts for
approximately 39% of the total non‐residential low‐rise construction market in the United
States. MBMA provides engineering leadership through the many research programs that it
sponsors annually, often in coordination with major universities and engineering schools
throughout North America. This research is used to improve the performance, efficiency and
quality of metal building systems and to elevate the technology used to produce them.

Flexible Aluminium Tent Structures and Hangars for the Airport Industry

June 7th, 2011 — 1:07am

airport-suppliers.com

An outsized baggage x-ray facility air side at Heathrow T4 to handle large or irregular items before being taken on board an aircraft was required by BAA. Airport Capacity Solutions enlisted the expertise of Losberger to install this specialist bespoke insulated Steel structure to handle and scan baggage. This specialist job required our products and crew to meet many specifications and overcome numerous challenges that come with working air side at one of the World’s busiest airports.
Steel Hall X-ray facility.

A Losberger Steel Hall system was adapted to meet the bespoke requirements of BAA including standard building regs and site specific regualtions making this one of Losberger UK’s most complex projects to date.

Work commenced on site in late September to build the seemingly small 8m x 5m structure but with the most complex and intricate specification Losberger UK had ever worked with, it took 7 days to complete the build due to air side restrictions and the very complex nature of the site and project.

The intricate specification for the structure included building on two different leg heights due to the ground conditions, Mineral wool insulation with an overall thickness of 80mm for its non combustible core in accordance with BSEN 1182:2002, two apertures that allowed access through the structure and along a conveyor belt inside the x ray machine fitted with draft curtains and a specially adapted roller shutter door to fit the structure. All our crew and vehicles had to undergo security and background checks to gain access air side as well as all delivery vehicles, the nature of the highly secure site meant that working hours were also restricted.
