An outsized baggage x-ray facility air side at Heathrow T4 to handle large or irregular items before being taken on board an aircraft was required by BAA. Airport Capacity Solutions enlisted the expertise of Losberger to install this specialist bespoke insulated Steel structure to handle and scan baggage. This specialist job required our products and crew to meet many specifications and overcome numerous challenges that come with working air side at one of the World’s busiest airports.
Steel Hall X-ray facility.

A Losberger Steel Hall system was adapted to meet the bespoke requirements of BAA including standard building regs and site specific regualtions making this one of Losberger UK’s most complex projects to date.

Work commenced on site in late September to build the seemingly small 8m x 5m structure but with the most complex and intricate specification Losberger UK had ever worked with, it took 7 days to complete the build due to air side restrictions and the very complex nature of the site and project.

The intricate specification for the structure included building on two different leg heights due to the ground conditions, Mineral wool insulation with an overall thickness of 80mm for its non combustible core in accordance with BSEN 1182:2002, two apertures that allowed access through the structure and along a conveyor belt inside the x ray machine fitted with draft curtains and a specially adapted roller shutter door to fit the structure. All our crew and vehicles had to undergo security and background checks to gain access air side as well as all delivery vehicles, the nature of the highly secure site meant that working hours were also restricted.

Universal Steel Buildings Supplies Hangars to New York Airport

June 7th, 2011 — 1:01am

Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) April 30, 2011

Universal Steel Buildings has contracted to design, engineer and supply three Olympia Steel Buildings® pre-engineered steel buildings to FirstAIR Group of Horseheads, New York. Universal Steel Buildings Construction Services will complete the concrete work and erect the prefabricated metal buildings planned for the hangar-terminal complex on site. Construction on the more than twelve thousand square foot multi-purpose pre-engineered metal building hangar-airport terminal complex will begin in May of this year.

FirstAIR Group Inc is a company comprised of Aviation, Development and Business Resource professionals, providing aircraft maintenance, aircraft charter and sales, helicopter scenic rides and photography, and International Airport Development in Horseheads, New York near the Elimira-Corning Regional Airport.

The new Olympia Steel Buildings airplane hangar will accommodate a large Kingair Twin Jet and a jet-propelled helicopter used to provide scenic Finger Lakes area tours, as well as to accommodate maintenance areas for commercial airlines and private planes. The hangar-terminal complex is comprised of three pre-engineered steel buildings connected into one huge twelve-thousand foot complex with a one-hundred foot clearspan that arcs thirty-five feet into the air providing ample space for the planes garaged for maintenance and protection from the elements. An existing t-hangar on the property will be coming down later this year to make room for additional pre-engineered steel airplane hangars once the current construction project is completed.

“It’s a very exciting project for us,” states Darin Skomo, project manager for the Construction Division of Universal Steel Buildings. “The scenery on the drive from Pittsburgh to FirstAir’s Horseheads, New York location through the Allegheny National Forest is breathtaking. The project itself is challenging: designing three pre-engineered steel buildings to connect as one with a one-hundred foot clearspan arching thirty-five feet into the air to provide clearance for the planes that will be garaged there,” continues Skomo. “We will finish construction before the big Watkins Glenn NASCAR race in August so the new hangar and air terminal will be ready to accommodate the many NASCAR fans who will be flying in to enjoy the race.”

Because of the strength and durability of steel and the remarkable clearspan space that is achievable with Olympia Steel Buildings unique trussless metal building design – up to three hundred feet of completely clearspan space with no obstructing columns – pre-engineered metal building construction is ideal for aircraft hangars and air terminals. Universal Steel Buildings supplies Olympia Steel Buildings pre-engineered steel buildings and metal building systems to private and commercial airports, military and civilian agencies and FBO’s all over the world.

Why Choose A Metal Building For Your Barn In Houston?

June 7th, 2011 — 12:53am

articledashboard.com /By: Roel Marez

Over the years, the popularity of metal as a primary construction material for horse barn has dramatically increaseda clear sign that many builders are growing more and more aware on the benefits of this material.

Here are the reasons why metal should be preferred more than any other materials in building a horse barn:

1.Cost This is perhaps the most attractive advantage of metal for many equestrians. Savings can be as much as 50% or 60% compared to other building materials. This includes the cost of labor as pre-fabricated metals are easier to build and require less time to assemble.
2.Possibility for future expansion Traditional barn that is made mainly of wood is built permanently, offering no room for expansion. Should there be any plan to expand, the whole building must be redesigned or another barn should be constructed. As a result, expansion for wood horse barn can be more expensive. Metal barn is different. It is easier to expand since it is easier to construct. Expanding a metal barn becomes cheaper.

3.Environmentally friendly The metal that is used on barns are made from recycled scrap metal, not old growth trees. Meaning, the nature don’t have to sacrifice several trees for you to be able to build a new barn.
4.Low maintenance When building a barn, you don’t just count to initial expenses, you also count the long-term expenses and upkeep cost. Unlike wood that requires periodic repainting and replacing of rotten parts, metal require no repainting and little maintenance. Metal is also not susceptible to termites and other insects that can shorten the life of the structure. And unlike wood barns, keeping metal barns clean is much easier.
5.Insurance savings Because the materials used for metal barns are 100% non-combustible steel, you will pay less on insurance premiums, giving you more savings.
6.Long life A metal barn building typically has 25-year warranty, making it almost a lifetime of guaranteed repairs under warranty.
7.Kick proof and chew proof Serious injuries such as splinters often happen inside the barn than when the horse is outside. Wood stalls are potentially dangerous for your horses in the event of accidental kicking. Wood is also prone to chipping as horses have the natural tendency to chew everything in from of them. With metal, this is not possible.
8.Energy-efficient and modern design Wood can be construction many different ways, but it has the same look. With metal, designs are endless.
9.Attractive finishes Metal barn can easily match the design and color of your existing building.
10.Durable and weather resistant Wood tends to rot, decay and weaken as a result of varying weather conditions. And if you are living in Houston where weather can go from perfectly sunny to devastatingly worst in just a matter of days, you need a material that can not only withstand different weather conditions but also last for the years to come.

Steel Building Brings ‘Green’ to Organic Blueberry Farm in KY

April 21st, 2011 — 4:41pm

It’s no surprise that many people look forward to summer because of the food that the earth offers in abundance during the season—deep green cucumbers, bright red tomatoes, sheathed yellow corn, seed-speckled strawberries, and tiny bursts of blueberries are typical staples found at most barbecues, picnics, and dinner tables.

But for people driving along Highway 90 in Metcalfe County, KY, the surprise comes when they happen upon Fuller’s Hillside Nursery in Summer Shade. Instead of the typical ramshackle roadside stand, there sits a semicircular steel building which serves as the storefront of Susan Fuller’s organic blueberry farm. Attached to the building is a greenhouse which contains a variety of plants and flowers.

“We always get a lot of questions on our building, and customers love the cool breeze running through when we have the front and back doors open,” says Susan Fuller. “It opens up to all the plants in the greenhouse and makes the space seem so much larger. “

Fuller’s decision to build with steel generated from her experiences while living in Florida. “We got our first steel building in 2005 in Florida after three hurricanes destroyed our garage,” says Fuller. “As do-it-yourself type of people, we found them easy to put together, and a great project. When we moved to central Kentucky, we put up another one for our organic blueberry farm.”

Fuller is a proponent of working with the land and incorporated many ‘green’ elements in the building and adjoining greenhouse. “Our building has a greenhouse on the south facing wall to take advantage of solar gain in the winter,” she says. “The 10 X 30 concrete porch floor in the greenhouse works as a bio-mass to hold the heat. We placed a rain gutter on one side to collect rain water and on the other side we have a plant bed. Inside, we added a second story —the downstairs works as a sales room and workshop, and the upstairs works as storage and an office. When the building is done, it will have a grey water system, composting toilet, tank less hot water heaters, solar panels, and possibly a windmill.”

Manufacturers of steel buildings, steel building kits, and prefabricated steel buildings say that steel buildings are popular among those committed to protecting and utilizing the environment because of various green building techniques, which include:
• Solar reflectance and reliability through the use of Galvalume Plus coatings;
• Emphasis on taking advantage of renewable resources such as use of sunlight through solar powered energy sources;
• Measures to reduce energy use and increase efficiency of the building envelope (the barrier between conditioned and unconditioned space) by using high efficiency windows and insulation;
• Orientation of windows, walls, awnings, and porches to maximize solar gain in the winter;
• Onsite renewable energy through solar power, wind power, hydro power, or biomass which significantly reduce the environmental impact of the building; and
• Reduction in the impact on wells and water treatment plants.

Butler Manufacturing and High Steel Structures Team Up on Steel Building Systems for Athletic Center at West Point

March 27th, 2011 — 6:12pm

Wednesday, January 03, 2007
Lancaster, Pa. (January 3, 2007) – Butler Manufacturing of Annville, Pa., and High Steel Structures Inc. of Lancaster, Pa., teamed up to fabricate steel framing used to build a new athletic center at West Point, a project that began in June 2006. Butler Manufacturing had the lead on designing the frames and called upon assistance from High Steel Structures, a bridge superstructure fabricator, as an efficient approach to making the larger components for the project. High Steel Structures has found that providing strategic assistance to building fabricators such as Butler is a logical application of their core competencies in the bridge-building industry.

History of the project:

In 2005, the United States Military Academy announced an initiative that would complete the Michie Stadium Athletic Complex begun in 2001. The key addition was the indoor athletic training facility.

Following a year-long process of design and construction planning, it was determined that a pre-engineered steel building system would be best suited to create the unique features planned for the new 92,400-square-foot building. This decision was made in large part due to the ability of such structures to span large areas, to offer shorter construction times than traditional methods, and to provide greater overall lifecycle value.

Butler Manufacturing played a critical role in the process, designing the frames that were used for the building. The plans include an indoor training facility that is unlike the field houses or athletic facilities found on most college campuses. The building has unusually high (65 feet) ceilings to accommodate punting, kicking, and return drills.

Other special features include padding on the interior walls to ensure a higher degree of safety, special lighting configurations to enhance the quality of videos shot during practices, a 40-yard sprint track for speed training, and FieldTurf® artificial turf to provide a field surface that is more realistic and safer for the athletes.

In all, more than 825 tons of steel were used to construct the facility.

The project was funded by the largest single donation in the history of the federal Service Academies—a $15 million donation to West Point’s Association of Graduates from Bill and Carol Foley. Mr. Foley graduated from the Military Academy in 1967 and was commissioned as an officer in the United States Air Force where he reached the rank of Captain.

Mr. Foley is the Chairman of the Board and the CEO of Fidelity National Financial Corporation, a global provider of products and outsourced solutions to the financial and real estate industries. He also serves on the boards of JEA, Inc. and Florida Rock Industries, Inc. Until recently, Mr. Foley was the Chairman of the Board of CKE Restaurants, Inc. He and his wife Carol have four children and reside in Jacksonville, Fla.

The facility will be named the Foley Athletic Center in recognition of Mr. Foley’s donation, which is the largest single gift in the history of West Point. Construction is scheduled to be completed in January 2007.
